“Like several other Asian immigrant groups, Asian Indians (or East Indians) are recentimmigrants. Only 17,000 total came from 1820 to 1965, with the majority of those arriving before 1917. These pioneers were subjected to some of the same anti-Asian measuresthat restricted Chinese immigration.
